Jean-François SABLET Morgues (Switzerland) 1745 – Nantes 1819 Portrait of a Man in a Coat in Front of the Château de Meudon Oil on canvas, 60 x 49 cm. Signed and dated lower left: F. Sablet / 1813 The son of Jacob Sablet, a painter and art dealer, Jean-François Sablet came to Paris in 1767, where he studied under Vien. Remaining in France, he spent some time in Rome in 1792 and settled permanently in Nantes in 1805. Commissioned to decorate the Stock Exchange in 1808, he executed six large grisailles in the style of bas-relief, depicting the Emperor’s visit. These works have been lost, but the Dobrée Museum in Nantes preserves preparatory drawings for them. Jean-François Sablet is best known today for his small-format portraits, such as the Portrait of Dobrée the Elder (Nantes, Musée Dobrée), his Self-Portrait, and the portrait of Cacault (Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts). Although born in Switzerland, Jean-François Sablet and his brother Jacques spent their entire careers in Italy and France. Both employed a refined and delicate technique that brings them close to Boilly and Gauffier and allows them to be legitimately included in the French school. While the paintings of the two brothers have often been confused, our portrait, which is signed, is a work by Jean-François, painted ten years after the death of his brother.
