Attributed to Jens JUEL (1745–1802), Danish School. Portrait of Louise Augusta of Holstein, wife of Frederick Christian II of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg. Oil on oval canvas. 71 x 52 cm (old molded and gilded wooden frame) Louise Augusta of Denmark and Norway (1771–1843) was officially the daughter of King Christian VII and Queen Caroline- Mathilde. However, it is widely accepted that her biological father was Yoann Friedrich Struensee. The latter, the king’s physician, became the queen’s lover and is likely the princess’s biological father. After Struensee’s execution and her mother’s banishment, Louise Augusta was raised at the Danish court, at Christiansborg Palace. She went on to marry Frederick Christian II of Schleswig-Holstein.
