Attributed to Augustin de SAINT-AUBIN (Paris 1736–1807) *La toilette* Pen and black ink over black pencil lines, gray wash 17 x 21.5 cm Mounted directly onto an old backing sheet inscribed in pen and brown ink: “This drawing is by Beaudouin, son-in-law of François Boucher. He painted in gouache and miniatures. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Paris. ” The composition presented here differs from the one engraved and executed in gouache by Baudoin (portrait orientation), in which we see primarily a male figure assisting with the woman’s toilet. The poses of the maid and her mistress, however, are identical—though reversed—in a drawing (of different composition) held in Stockholm that has been successively attributed to Boucher and Durameau, and is currently attributed to Boucher (see Anne Leclair, *Louis-Jacques Durameau*, Paris, 2001, ed. Arthena, no. DR8, repr.). The drawing style here is reminiscent of that of Augustin de Saint- Aubin (see, for example, the drawing of “La marchande de broderies,” anonymous sale, Paris, Oct. 25, 2023, no. 142, repr.).
