Attributed to Claudio COELLO (Madrid 1642–1693)Portrait of Marie Anne of Neubourg, Queen of SpainCanvasHeight: 130 cmWidth: 97 cmMarie Anne of Neubourg was born in Düsseldorf on October 28, 1667. She was the daughter of Philip William of Neuburg, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth Amalia of Hesse-Darmstadt. Her sister Eleonora Madeleine married Emperor Leopold I, and her sister Marie Sophie married King Peter II of Portugal. On August 28, 1689, she married by proxy King Charles II of Spain, the last Spanish Habsburg king and widower of Marie-Louise d’Orléans. The wedding was celebrated in person in Valladolid in 1690. Despite the court’s expectations, the royal couple remained childless, which triggered a dynastic crisis and led to the War of the Spanish Succession.Charles II died on November 1, 1700, and Philip of Anjou became king under the name Philip V. The dowager queen was removed from court and settled in Toledo. Suspected of supporting Archduke Charles during the War of the Spanish Succession, she was exiled to Bayonne in 1706. She remained there for more than thirty years, then was allowed to return to Spain in 1738. She died in Guadalajara on July 16, 1740.
