Chest of drawers in Chinese lacquer and Parisian varnish, curved on three sides and featuring two drawers. The Kangxi-period Chinese lacquer, with a black background, is decorated in gold with landscapes, pagodas, rocks, and birds. Richly ornamented with chiseled and gilded Rocaille-style bronze work. Molded breccia marble top. Louis XV style, with antique elements. Bears a DF mark for Jean Desforges. H. 86 cm - W. 134 cm - D. 60 cm Provenance: Former Rothschild Collection, private collection. Bibliography: Thibaut Wolvesperges, “Le meuble français au XVIIIe siècle,” pp. 42–43. 18th International Antiques Biennial, Paris, Grand Palais, September 1996, booth 66. In our opinion, this superb chest of drawers is adorned with panels of late 17th- or early 18th-century Kangxi Chinese lacquer, circa 1700, certainly originating from a folding screen and adapted to a frame, then adorned with superb bronze fittings in the style of Desforges, the famous cabinetmaker of the Louis XV era.
