Two porcelain plates with heraldic decoration for the English market (Frederick), China. Yongzheng period (1723–1735), circa 1724. The plates are decorated in “Famille Rose” glazes, featuring gilded friezes, Buddhist motifs, and floral garlands; in the center is the coat of arms of the Frederick family, baronets of Westminster: Or, a chevron azure accompanied by three doves in natural colors; the crest features a dove holding a laurel branch in its beak. Dimensions: 22 cm A chip on the rim of one plate and small chips on the reverse of the other. The gilding has been retouched on one. Sir John Frederick, created a baronet in June 1723, was born in March 1678. He was the son of Thomas Frederick and Leonora, heiress of Charles Marescoe. A prominent London merchant, he notably contributed to the financing of the reconstruction of Christ’s Hospital after the Great Fire of London, donating the sum of £5,000. Several of his brothers were also involved in trade with Asia: John Frederick served as supercargo for the South Sea Company, while Bartholomew Frederick succeeded him in that position after his death in 1755. The title of baronet then passed to the descendants of their brother, Sir Thomas Frederick, who had been governor of Fort St. David in East India.
