Two porcelain plates with heraldic decoration for the French market (Dassier des Brosses), China. Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1780. Both plates are decorated in “Famille Rose” glazes, with garlands of flowers on the rim, and the combined coats of arms of the Dassier des Brosses family, Or, three bands of Gules; and the Garat de Saint-Priest family, Azure, a chevron accompanied in chief by two stars and in base by a cord. Dimensions: 22.5 cm. Very good condition. Jacques-Joachim Dassier des Brosses (1747–1796) belonged to a noble family from the Angoumois region, established in the Confolens area. Admitted in 1761 as a page in the King’s Grand Stables, he later became Lord, then Marquis, of Brosses. In 1775, he married Julie-Agathe Garat de Saint-Priest. Around the same time, he had a grand mansion built in Confolens, known today as the Hôtel Dassier des Brosses, a vast residence with a courtyard and garden that still stands and now houses City Hall. On the eve of the Revolution, he took part in the assemblies of the nobility convened in Angoulême in 1789. Forced into exile during the Revolution, he joined the Army of the Princes, while part of his property was seized and sold as national property. His wife, who remained in France, was arrested and then executed in Paris in July 1794. Jacques-Joachim Dassier des Brosses died in exile in Maastricht in 1796.
