Botany - Botanica Specifica Magnolia and Veronica spicata. 2 original drawings. Watercolor, partly with opaque paints, over a fine pencil sketch, on paper. Each approx. 35 × 25 cm (sheet size). The colors are fresh. The paper has a slight age-related discoloration and a few faint spots (on the second sheet in the upper left and in the center). The second drawing is inscribed and dated in ink in the lower right: “Schloßberg near Teplitz. July 10, 1862.” (The Schloßberg near Teplitz (Czech: Doubravská hora or Doubravka for short; historically also Daubersberg) is a striking, 382-meter-high mountain on the eastern edge of the North Bohemian spa town of Teplice (Teplitz) in the Czech Republic) Depicted are: Magnolia. The illustration shows a flowering branch with one fully open bloom and a larger bloom that is still half-closed. There are also two buds, one of which has the typical fuzzy brown bud cover. The petals transition from a deep purple-carmine at the base to a delicate white-pink at the tips. This color gradient is rendered very realistically through fine glazes and a dotting technique. The gnarled branch, with leaf scars and bud bases, is rendered in rich detail using shades of brown and gray. The species corresponds to the appearance of the tulip magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana). Spiked speedwell (Veronica spicata). The entire plant is depicted, from the root system to the flower spike. The inflorescences are shown at various stages of development: the upper spike has bloomed in a rich violet-blue, while the lateral spikes are still in bud and silvery-gray. The narrow, gray-green leaves are delicately rendered using a glazing technique. The plant is composed diagonally across the page, as is typical for scientific botanical studies. In the lower right corner is a handwritten inscription in ink indicating the location and date. Botany. - Botanica Specifica - Magnolia and a Veronica spicata. 2 original drawings.
