Fashion Strasser, Ernst A collection of 20 color design drawings for women’s dresses and suits, 17 of which are large-format. 1980s. Each in ink, gouache, and colored pencil on lightweight white paper, mostly mounted on black cardboard. 17.2 x 10.7 cm to 42 x 29.6 cm. Mostly signed in print with various trademarks. Contemporary half-leather binding, recto with mounted label (“Linea Est”) and verso with handwritten title on the cover (torn at the hinges, scuffed). A unique portfolio featuring designs for eccentric women’s dresses, fantastical costumes for the stage and masquerade balls. - The colorful and whimsically shaped drawings by the Viennese designer Ernst Strasser mostly depict structured garments—sometimes with tiered silhouettes—often featuring eccentric accessories such as stand-up collars, headwear, feather boas, and fringe, designed with geometric patterns (e.g., Greek meander) or using the stylistic vocabulary of Art Deco and the typical postmodern attitude of the 1980s. Most of these interesting designs are signed “Ernst Strasser” in print and alternately bear the trademarks “Studios Est,” “CAS,” and “crystal art studio”; one of the designs includes the artist’s Vienna address and phone number. - Several of the sheets show signs of mounting along the upper and lower white margins; overall, a well-preserved rarity and a rich source of inspiration for fashion designers.
