South America Martius, Carl Fr. Ph. von Collection of 19 ink drawings (washed and in sepia) and watercolors, as well as 32 lithographic plates by E. Bollmann, F. Hohe, C. A. Lebschée, and others, from the Martius estate. ca. 1810–1855. Various sizes, mostly mounted on backing cardboard (approx. 35.5 x 27 cm). Loose in a paper box with a handwritten label reading “Martius Nachlass” (box heavily scuffed and bumped, with some tears at the corners and a restored spine). Rare. - Part of the estate of the German naturalist and botanist Martius, related to his *Flora Brasiliensis*. - The prints and drawings presented here focus primarily on landscape depictions. Many sheets bear annotations and captions that are presumably by Martius himself. Two sheets depicting views of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings bear the inscription “Taunay.” This likely refers to Adrien Taunay the Younger (1803–1828), a French painter who—according to Rugendas—participated as chief draftsman in the Langsdorff expedition to Brazil. - The lithographed plates are landscape depictions from the first part of the *Flora brasiliensis*, the botanical work documenting the great Brazilian expedition of Martius and Spix (1817–1820). After Spix’s death in 1826, Martius assumed sole responsibility for compiling and publishing the travel account. He continued the botanical research until his death in 1865 as part of the ongoing publication of “Flora brasiliensis.” - Some slight edge wear and tears. Some pieces have come loose from their mounts. Overall, a well-preserved and extensive collection from the naturalist’s significant estate.
