Date: 19th century Description: Elegant and clad only in a light shawl, a young woman holds a small child on her knee. Numerous small fairy-like creatures and fairy-tale figures are depicted on the reverse. There is another portrait on the reverse. This sheet comes from the sketchbook of an anonymous artist who primarily drew motifs from everyday life in the Tyrol region and southern Germany. His collection also includes depictions of ships and castles, suggesting that the artist traveled to the coastal regions of northern Germany or along the romantic Rhine and Moselle valleys. His drawing style remains sketchy and reflects the spontaneous nature of the works, which the artist must have always created on the spot in his sketchbook or on a notepad.
