PENTAGON GROUP Audio Desk Desk Metal—shipped without the Glass top Prototype Germany, 1992 H76 L152 P61 cm Designed at the intersection of furniture, sculpture, and audio equipment, the Audio Desk is a particularly striking example of the experimental and radical design language developed by the Pentagon Group in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its uncompromising architectural construction and industrial aesthetic transform the traditional audio console into a true functional sculpture. Designed to house hi-fi and audio equipment, the piece combines rigorous geometry with a deliberately raw treatment of materials, characteristic of the collective’s work. Founded in Cologne in 1985 by Gerd Arens, Wolfgang Laubersheimer, Reinhard Müller, Ralph Sommer, and Meyer Voggenreiter, the Pentagon group established itself as one of the leading figures in Neues Deutsches Design (New German Design). Rejecting both conventional industrial production and the strict functionalist principles inherited from the Bauhaus, the collective developed an experimental approach in which furniture becomes a medium for artistic expression. Metal, exposed structure, unconventional proportions, and deliberately industrial finishes became central elements of their visual language. Many of Pentagon’s creations were produced as one-of-a-kind pieces, prototypes, or in extremely limited series, contributing to their rarity and growing significance in the international collectible design market. The Audio Desk, listed as a prototype, perfectly embodies this philosophy. At once an audio console, a workstation, an architectural structure, and a sculptural object, it represents the radical approach that has made the Pentagon group one of the most distinctive voices of the German design avant-garde.
