Richard Meier (born 1934) King Richard Candleholder Silver plated metal Swid Powell edition Circa 1980 H23 cm Good original condition, slight surface scratches An American architect and 1984 Pritzker Prize laureate, Richard Meier is known for his immaculately white buildings with rigorous geometry. In the 1980s, the New York-based design firm Swid Powell invited architects to design tableware: Michael Graves, Robert Venturi, Arata Isozaki, Ettore Sottsass, and Charles Gwathmey all participated. The King Richard candleholder transposes Meier’s design language to the scale of an object, in a style reminiscent of the Vienna Secession—particularly Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte. An architect’s creation, at the intersection of fine metalwork and postmodernism.
