LAVALLEYE (Jacques). Lucas van Leyden. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Engravings. Complete Works. [Paris], Arts et Métiers Graphiques, n.d. Large quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. An important study by Jacques Lavalleye, professor at the Catholic University of Leuven, devoted to the engravings of Lucas van Leyden and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The volume constitutes an extensive iconographic catalog of their engravings, lavishly illustrated with black-and-white reproductions, often full-page. Notably reproduced are the major narrative, religious, allegorical, and popular compositions that established the reputation of these two masters of Northern engraving in the 16th century. This documentary work is particularly interesting for bringing together, in a single volume, the engravings of Lucas van Leyden and Bruegel the Elder. Dust jacket is slightly scuffed, with minor signs of wear; interior is fresh and well-preserved.
