LLUISA VIDAL PUIG (Barcelona, 1876–1918). “Mother and Daughter.” Oil on canvas. Signed on the reverse. Measurements: 32 x 23 cm; 44 x 35 cm (frame). Lluïsa Vidal was part of the young generation of Catalan Modernist artists. A painter, draftsman, and illustrator, she was a great portraitist, highly regarded for her ability to capture the emotional state of her subjects. Another facet of her work is genre painting, a style very characteristic of the artist, in which she depicts the everyday lives of women with complete naturalness. She also excelled at plein air painting and her favorite subjects: folk festivals, village dances, beaches, and streets—almost always featuring figures, vibrant colors, confident lines, and bold brushstrokes. She died young in Barcelona as a result of the global Spanish flu pandemic.
