ANTOINE DAENS (Belgium, late 19th–early 20th century). “Woman in the Mirror,” 1917. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 109 x 69 cm; 123 x 83 cm (frame). Conceived as an intimate dressing-table scene, the work is an interesting example of Antoine Daens’s oeuvre, particularly due to the prominence given to the female figure, the sensuality of the color, and the decorative setting. The young woman, depicted nude from behind as she adjusts a headdress in front of the mirror, allows the artist to simultaneously show both her body and her reflected face, enriching the spatial interplay of the composition. Here, Daens employs a particularly luminous and vibrant palette, contrasting the pearlescent skin tones with the intense reds of the headdress and the blues and pinks that dominate the interior. Patterned draperies, flowers, vases, and fabrics reinforce the sophisticated character of the scene and highlight his interest in the pictorial qualities of surfaces. Dated 1917, the work is particularly representative of his artistic sensibility due to its free brushwork, his taste for color, and the modern, intimate treatment of the female figure, moving away from a strictly academic conception of the nude to emphasize light, atmosphere, and the sensuality of the setting. Antoine Daens was known primarily for his figurative painting and genre scenes. His work falls within the Belgian realist and academic tradition, with a particular focus on the depiction of characters and everyday scenes. His works are notable for his interest in the figures’ expressions, his treatment of light, and a progressively freer painterly style, in keeping with the transformations that European painting underwent around the turn of the century.
