ALEJANDRO MONGE (Zaragoza, 1988). “Flowers,” Black Series, 2023. Oil on canvas. Measurements: “Flowers,” part of the Black Series, encapsulates one of the most distinctive aspects of Alejandro Monge’s painterly exploration: the use of a seemingly photographic language to introduce a second, critical, and conceptual layer of meaning. The black background, which has become a distinctive element of the series, accentuates the isolation of the depicted subject and transforms a seemingly recognizable image into a scene charged with tension. Through his extraordinary technical virtuosity, Monge questions the way we consume images and objects, and addresses issues related to consumerism, materiality, and the contradictions of contemporary society. Trained at the Zaragoza School of Arts, Monge began his career in sculpture, a discipline that continues to play a significant role in his work. His painting is characterized by a meticulous, hyperrealistic approach, akin to photography, while in his sculptural works and installations he incorporates everyday objects—especially banknotes—to reflect, with irony, on economic value, consumption, and the contradictions of today’s society. His work has been featured at prominent international art fairs, including LA Art Show (Los Angeles), Art Miami, Art Madrid, Estampa, SWAB Barcelona, and KunstRAI Amsterdam, solidifying his presence on the Spanish and international contemporary art scene.
