JOAN PERE VILADECANS (Barcelona, 1948). Untitled. Oil on cardstock. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 70 x 50 cm; 88 x 68 cm (frame). A self-taught artist, Viladecans first gained recognition in 1967 through an exhibition at the Cercle de Sant Lluc in Barcelona. The success of that exhibition led to his early recognition, and since then he has held exhibitions in Spain, Canada, Germany, Mexico, the United States, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Luxembourg. Notable among his solo exhibitions are the one at the Seville Expo (1992), the UNTER DM in Cologne (2001), the Berlin exhibition of his works on paper (2003), and two in Barcelona, “Symptoms and Diseases” and “Heritage and Memory,” in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Viladecans began his career deeply influenced by two of the most renowned Catalan artists of the 20th century: Antoni Tàpies and Joan Brossa. His early work stems from a formal baroque style rich in poetic resonance, blending techniques with a dense brushstroke that brings him close to material painting. Subsequently, his creations have evolved and been refined through a complex process of synthesis that culminates in the development of a strictly personal aesthetic language, based on reflection and a constant dialogue between instinct and reason, figuration and abstraction.
