LEMOISNE (Paul-André). Gavarni: Painter and Lithographer. Paris, Floury, 1924. 2 volumes, large 8vo, paperback, in damaged slipcases. The work is illustrated with separate plates on heavy paper, including 8 in color, and numerous in-text illustrations. Some are mounted on labeled mounts, and the portrait of Balzac (p. 98, vol. 1) is pasted onto the page. An art historian and curator of the print collection, Lemoisne draws here on his special relationship with the artist—whose granddaughter he married—and his privileged access to the artist’s correspondence to write this biography, which is both comprehensive and intimate.
