From 1920 to 1929, Paris became a gathering place for people from all over the world, who forgot the suffering of the First World War and celebrated peace. This movement gave rise to the "Roaring Twenties". Artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Chagall and Tsuguharu Foujita were very active at this time. Avant-garde, surrealism, art deco and jazz were in full swing, creating an immense wave that laid the foundations of modern European culture. After the outbreak of the First World War, Czóbel left Paris for Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In 1925, he returned to Hungary, and until 1940, he traveled between Paris and Budapest. During the 1920s, Czóbel's work was characterized by thick, dark contours and deep, dark tones. In this work, the bright colors of the background blend harmoniously into a calmer composition. Although the woman's face is indistinct and in shadow, the light on her skin makes it stand out with surprising sensuality and freshness.
