Anonymous - A Goldsmith's Masterpiece A magnificent pocket watch with a granulated case, set with semiprecious stones Case No. 722, Dimensions 43 mm, circa 1830, Weight 57 g, Origin: France Case: 18K gold, rose-colored semi-precious stones. Dial: Gilded, guilloché pattern, engraved band of flowers. Movement: Full-plate movement, going barrel, three-arm brass balance. The case, bezel, pendant, and bow are richly decorated with granulated gold, featuring occasional two-color gold granules on the front and applied yellow-gold acanthus leaves on the back. Rose-colored semi-precious stones adorn the wide bezel and the back. Granulation is a jewelry-making technique in which a surface is covered with spherules or granules of precious metal. The technique is believed to have originated in Sumer about 5,000 years ago. In the first millennium B.C., the technique was used by the Etruscans living in what is now Italy. Greek craftsmen also employed the technique, but it was the work from Etruria that became famous, in part due to the mysteries surrounding the process. Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movement: very good, in working order.
