Rolex - Explorer A rare vintage wristwatch with a beautifully patinated "frog foot" dial and caramel-colored hour markers and hands that have darkened over time Movm. No. 236408, Ref. 1016, Cal. 1570, Case No. 2986311, Dimensions 36 mm, circa 1971, Origin: Switzerland Case: Steel, screw-down back marked 1016 and I.72, screw-down “Twinlock” winding crown. Dial: Black, luminous hour markers/luminous Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9, luminous Mercedes hands. Movement: Automatic. The Rolex “Explorer” reference 1016 was part of the Rolex lineup for nearly 30 years after its launch in the early 1960s; the watch is also known as “The Reinforced Rolex” due to its particularly sturdy design. It features the characteristic black dial with bold 3-6-9 hour markers. Although the Explorer was produced in large numbers, very few of the models were intended for military use. The “frog foot” dial, with its beautiful patina, is in excellent condition. The hands show some corrosion; the hour hand has a few cracks in the otherwise beautifully darkened luminous material. Case: very good, worn. Dial: very good, slightly oxidized. Movement: very good, in working order, cleaning recommended.
