Patek Philippe’s reference 5100 was launched to commemorate the new millennium and is once again a fascinating blend of technical expertise and breathtaking design: The innovative 10-day movement sets a horological benchmark—it is powered by two powerful mainsprings, their large rubies visible through the crystal case back. The shape of the case is a clever nod to the historic reference 2554, whose compound curves earned the watch the nickname “Manta”; to avoid any misunderstanding as to where the inspiration comes from, the user manual actually includes a picture of a manta ray. Reference 5100 was produced in a limited edition of just 3,000 pieces, comprising 1,500 yellow gold, 250 rose gold, 450 white gold, and 300 platinum versions. The tools used to create the case will never be used again—reference 5100 will always be a one-of-a-kind special edition. Case: very good, minor scratches. Dial: very good.
