Lange & Söhne Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite,” reference 701.005, ranks among the most significant timepieces in modern German watchmaking. Introduced in 1994 as part of the first collection following the revival of the historic Glashütte manufacture, it marked—powerfully and unmistakably—the return of A. Lange & Söhne to the realm of international haute horlogerie. A technical milestone is the first-ever combination of a tourbillon with a chain/fusée transmission in a wristwatch. The tourbillon cage weighs barely 0.5 grams, measures 12.3 mm in diameter, and consists of 76 individual components. The stepped planetary gear system compensates for the decreasing torque of the mainspring, which is integrated into a miniature cone (the fusée) composed of 38 parts. Inside beats the hand-wound caliber L902.0, whose elaborate finishing can be admired through the sapphire-crystal case back. The 38.5 mm platinum case is paired with a solid silver dial, blued hands, and the characteristic layout featuring small seconds at 9 o’clock, a power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock, and a tourbillon at 6 o’clock—resulting in a design that is both classical and beautifully balanced. Only 50 examples of the platinum reference 701.005 were produced. Its exceptional rarity, technical sophistication, and pivotal role in the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne make it one of the brand’s most coveted early models and a true milestone in modern Saxon watchmaking. Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movement: very good, in working order, cleaning recommended. Please note that leather straps made from endangered or protected species—such as alligator, crocodile, or lizard—are used in our catalog or on our website for illustrative purposes only.
