J. Assmann - American Market An exquisite, extremely rare gold-enamel Glashütte hunting-style pocket watch in a lavishly ornamented case—manufactured in 1A quality Movm. No. 5718, Case No. 5718, Dimensions 52 mm, circa 1873, Weight 118 g, Origin: Germany Case: 18K gold, black enamel inlay, “Juergens” case design, Renaissance-style high-relief ornaments. Dial: Silvered, with applied gold floral ornaments. Movement: 3/4-plate movement, lever escapement, gold-screw-compensated balance. This hunting-case watch features a wonderfully preserved engraved case, decorated with floral elements, tendrils, blossoms, and a striking pinecone motif on the rear hinged cover. The rim of the case, the band, the center, and the bow are likewise decorated with geometric friezes. Despite some signs of age, the dial retains an opulent presence. Its center is elaborately embellished with floral engraving, while the edge is beautifully finished with applied gold ornaments—truly a showpiece of the highest order. Judging by the 18K decorative case and the elaborate dial, the watch was likely made for the American market, which was at the time the Assmann company’s key market. The engraving “J. Assmann Dresden” on the gold dome and the plate supports this notion. At the time, U.S. law required that the watch’s provenance be stated. Since Glashütte was still unknown at the time, both A. Lange & Cie. and J. Assmann signed their export pieces “Dresden.” Source: www.glashuetteuhren.de Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movement: very good, in working condition.
