155 - Mughal, 19th century, a jade hilted sword. The single edged sword with gold damascened forte and date, '998'. Further, gold inlay continues to both sides of the blade. The jade hilt of pistol grip has precious stones set into both sides of the hilt. The scabbard is with repoussé decoration of scrolling vines and repeating motifs and contains further set precious and semi precious stones. An Arabic couplet: subhana man tahayyara fi suni‘ihi al-‘uqul subhana man bi-qudratihi yu‘jaz al-fuhul ‘Exalted be He by whose craft minds are astonished, Exalted be He by whose power explanations are rendered helpless.’ This is the Arabic refrain in Turkish poem by the poet Ziya Pasha (d. 1880) sana 998 ‘The year 998 (1589-90)’ From the Farsi Collection Dimensions: 31 in.
