Lebte 1903–08 in Rom. 1908 Mitglied der Berliner Sezession. Lebte 1908–13 in Paris, einige Monate in Indien. 1913 Übersiedlung nach Berlin. 1914–17 Zivilinternierung in Frankreich. 1920 Berufung an die Kunsthochschule Berlin–Charlottenburg, 1921–34 Professur. 1927 Mitbegründer der Badischen Sezession. 1937 wurden 311 Arbeiten als "entartet" aus deutschen Museen beschlagnahmt. 1945 Berufung zum Direktor der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Berlin–Charlottenburg. 1953 Autobiografie "Erinnerungen eines Malers".
