KOREAN JAR, 20TH CENTURY - Porcelain with a grayish glaze and a brown “tiger’s eye” enamel decoration depicting clouds and bamboo stalks. 34 x 30 cm The model for this decoration is a well-known jar housed at the Museum of Oriental Ceramics in Osaka, Ataka Collection, Japan, dating to the 17th century and likely produced in kilns in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula (The Radiance of Jade and the Clarity of Water. Korean Ceramics from the Ataka Collection, exhibition catalog, Chicago 1991, p. 123, no. 87); an example of a production that, following the economic crisis caused by the Japanese invasion at the end of the 16th century and the repercussions of the unrest resulting from the fall of the Ming dynasty and the simultaneous establishment of the Manchu Qing dynasty in China, favored materials available within Korea rather than the expensive imported cobalt blue.
