2191 - BUDDHA, NORTHERN INDIA, GUPTA PERIOD, 5TH CENTURY — Pink sandstone; the headless deity is depicted standing, dressed in a softly draped robe that leaves part of the chest exposed; metal base. 49.5 x 27.5 x 17.5 cm This Buddhist sculpture, created in the northern region of Uttar Pradesh during the Gupta period (4th–7th centuries CE), represents one of the pinnacles of Indian art of all time. In particular, the cities of Sarnath and Mathura were home to several artists specializing in this type of statuary; Mathura, in particular, benefited from the availability of pink sandstone found in its surrounding area. The rounded shoulders, elongated body, narrow waist and hips, and the close-fitting dothi with its flowing drapery are typical elements of Gupta religious art, well exemplified in the Buddha depicted here.

A larger Buddha with a less dynamic pose, but undoubtedly similar in style and material to this one, is housed at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (inv. 45-15).
