CHINTAMANI LOKESHVARA, NEPAL, 15TH CENTURY - Gray stone; the deity is depicted standing in the center in a dynamic pose, holding a garland of gems in his left hand raised upward and a spherical jewel in his right; at his feet are two attendants; on either side of the double-lotus-petal base are several devotees; on the reverse, a broad halo featuring a lush flowering tree with a bird nestled among its branches; wooden base. 33 x 23 x 7.5 cm Chintamani Lokeshvara is an iconographic and devotional variant of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, who held particular significance in Nepal, and to whom the faithful turned primarily for requests for material goods. The tree depicted behind him is the kalpavriksha, a powerful symbol of wisdom and abundance. A similar composition is documented in Himalayan Art Resources (no. 8847).
