CHINESE INCENSE BURNER, 17TH CENTURY - Bronze, shaped like a large lotus leaf upon which rests a three-legged toad; standing on the toad’s back is Liu Hai, with his right leg raised and his right arm extended upward. 57 x 28.2 x 34 cm Liu Hai is a famous Taoist immortal. Living in the 10th century, he passed the exams to enter the imperial bureaucracy while simultaneously pursuing alchemical studies. His encounter with the mythical three-legged toad (chanchu) was crucial to his eventual discovery of the elixir of immortality. He is considered the patron deity of wealth and is a very common subject in all areas of Chinese art, including bronze sculpture (see the example in the British Museum in London, inv. 1992,0612.1).
