[1541]. BOOK. (GOTHIC-CHRONICLE). OCAMPO, FLORIAN:. [THE FOUR COMPLETE PARTS OF THE CHRONICLE OF SPAIN THAT HIS MOST SERENE MAJESTY KING ALFONSO, KNOWN AS “THE WISE,” COMMISSIONED...]. [Zamora: Printed by Agustín de Paz and Juan Picardo, 1541]. Small folio. Folios II through CCCXXV are printed in Gothic type, in two columns. Numerous pagination errors. The copy is missing some original folios, which appear as handwritten additions in the volume: these are A1 (the title page), folio CCCXVIII, the last two folios (CCCXXVI and CCCXVII), and folios XXXIII, XXXX, XLI, and CCXIIII are either partially missing or reproduced by hand. Woodcut initials and abundant contemporary handwritten annotations in the margins. Folio A has been re-margined, with no loss of text, and folios CCCXLII and CCCCXIX have been restored at one corner, which slightly affects a few lines of text. Some water stains and oily smudges, as well as several marginal restorations. The following folios are missing: XLIII, CXI, CXIII, CXLIX, CCCLVIII, and CCCCXXI. Bound in full leather from the late 18th century, with dry stamping on both covers, the spine, and the headband. The copy belonged to B. L. de Piñar, who made several annotations and noted on the last flyleaf: “It appears to be in the handwriting of Pascual de Gayangos”; he also indicated that the handwritten folios were copied by C. Molina from a copy in the National Library. CCPB 31371-8. Palau 198376, First Edition. Florián de Ocampo was chronicler to Emperor Charles I, and in this volume he presents the history of Spain from the foundation of the world, albeit with semi-legendary episodes that highlight the antiquity of the Spanish monarchy.
