DIVIDED INTO FOUR VOLUMES. Madrid: Antonio Balbas, 1756. 4 vols. in small folio. I: 6 leaves + 299 folios. Engraving on the title page. II: Title page with chalcographic engraving + 2 h. + 298 p. III: Title page with chalcographic engraving + 2 h. + 302 fol. IV: Title page with chalcographic engraving + 1 h. + 364 fol. Text in two columns, with marginal notes and woodcut initials. Very clean copy, with only some foxing on a few pages of vol. III; the rest shows very slight and occasional foxing. Four vols. bound in Spanish cloth, double title labels, painted edges, reinforced spines, hand-decorated endpapers; the front flyleaf of vol. IV is missing, but all others are present. Maps are somewhat scuffed, and the second one has some peeling. Two bookplates, one of them by the Venezuelan writer Arturo Uslar Pietri. Palau 137462. Second edition of this important legal compendium of the provisions and laws intended to govern the colonies of the Indies. The regulations also sought to prevent corruption among those responsible for ensuring compliance, although this was only partially achieved. A fine copy.
