1674. PAMPHLETS. (LITERATURA DE CORDEL—LIMA). PAREDES, ANDRÉS DE:. TRIUMPHANT EULOGISTIC ACCLAMATION, PANEGYRIC PRAISE, TO THE IMMORTAL GLORY WITH WHICH, UPON ITS FIRST INAUGURATION, THE ROYAL UNIVERSITY OF SAN MARCOS IN THE CITY OF THE KINGS, THE COURTS OF PERU, WAS CROWNED BY THE EX. Licensed in Lima, 1674. Large 8vo. 16 leaves. Text with marginal notes. Title page with woodcut border; marginal restoration. Bears a handwritten ex-libris from the period reading: “From the College of St. Paul of the Society of Jesus in Lima.” Original binding in painted paper with a labeled parchment spine. Labeled bookplate. Palau 212795 lists 15 leaves (following Medina), because the copy they described lacked the poem on the last leaf, which is present here. Nor was Menéndez Pelayo able to compare any copies, so he did not know whether it contained these verses. The protagonist of this pamphlet, Baltasar de la Cueva, was appointed viceroy of Peru in 1673. This pamphlet commemorates his entry into Lima; the aristocrat was not very well received due to the austerity measures he implemented, and in 1678 he was removed from office as a result of the complaints he had provoked.
