[1586]. BOOK. (MEDICINE). [FRAGOSO, JUAN]. [UNIVERSAL SURGERY]. [Madrid: Widow of A. Gomez, 1586.] Large 4º. 343 folios + 22 leaves. The first 5 leaves are missing (including the title page). Decorated woodcut initials. Text with marginal notes. Some old handwritten annotations. Restored copy; corners of the first and last leaves reconstructed; moisture stains along the margins; rust spots. Recently bound in parchment; corners restored. Juan Fragoso studied at the University of Alcalá and practiced in Seville until 1570, when his reputation brought him to the court in Madrid. There he served as court surgeon to Queen Anne and later to Philip II. The first edition of this text dates from 1581; here we present the second edition, which incorporates for the first time—and with its own title page—the “Suma de las proposiciones de cirugia.” It is one of the most ambitious texts in 16th-century Spanish medicine and saw 14 editions in Spanish and as many as three in Italian in barely a century. The table of contents reflects a clear intent toward compilation and synthesis. Like all physicians of his generation, Fragoso follows Vesalius in the tenets of Galen, and although he criticizes the views of Paracelsus and Gesner, he acknowledges their contributions to the use of chemical medicines. Not in the CCPB. Palau 94184.
