BALBO, Italo (1896–1940), Italian aviator and minister. L.S., Tripoli, January 28, 1936, to Jean MERMOZ; 1½ pages, typewritten, quarto size, on letterhead reading “Il Maresciallo dell’Aria Governatore della Libia”; in Italian. He follows Mermoz’s epic and successive crossings of the Atlantic on a daily basis. Mermoz remains the highly valiant and much-admired aviator, whose courage is matched only by the greatness and nobility of his soul. He thanks him for his friendship toward Italy at a time when it is unjustly facing an absurd and dangerous coalition of nations that have arbitrarily chosen to support a government of plunderers and slaveholders… He hopes to welcome him to Tripoli… Enclosed is a postcard inscribed “Long live Mermoz! Italo Babo,” also signed by the actress and aviator Viviane ELDER, [Tripoli, May 7, 1936], with a stamp and address (Tripoli. Passaggiata Conte Volpi); and the handwritten text of a telegram from Balbo to Mermoz, congratulating him on his 12th crossing.
