MERMOZ, Jean Autograph letter signed “Jean,” May 9 [1930?], to his “Dearest Mom”; 2 pages, in-4. He is lazy and lacks courage: “Life isn’t cheerful, and that’s all there is to it… I could use two months in the middle of the countryside, all by myself. I crave some peace and quiet to soothe my nerves, which are in a bit of a shambles. It’s just another rough patch to get through, like all the others I’ve had—that we’ve been through—over the past eighteen months. You switch up your approach and start over until weariness sets in again. This illness can only be cured with strong doses of willpower. As long as the remedy lasts, we hold on. Fortunately, the satisfaction I get from my job renews that willpower, but if I didn’t have that, I’d have to go very far away to avoid breaking down… sometimes! […] Finally, I believe I’ll soon find other sources of satisfaction with the Aéropostale. I think Mr. B[ouilloux-]Lafont has won the day”… Source: - Jean Mermoz (1901–1936); - Gabrielle Gillet-Mermoz (1880–1955); - Then passed down through the family
