2179 - A fine, dated patronal icon depicting the Holy Martyr Arethas of Najran flanked by Patriarch Athanasios and the Venerable King Elesboi of Ethiopia, with a silver-GILT AND CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL RIZA Russian, dated 1903 (icon), Russian, Moscow, Dmitriy Shelaputin, 1896–1908 (riza) Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. Gilding. The silver-gilt riza is repoussé and chased, with cloisonné enamel decoration. Dated in Cyrillic along the lower border: “Painted in May of the year 7411.” The riza is marked with the district assay office mark, the 84 standard, and the Cyrillic master’s mark “SHELAPUTIN.” Four selected saints are depicted on the borders: the Guardian Angel, Saint Gregory the Great, Saint Eustathius, and Saint Mavra.
