1568 - A LARGE AND FINE ICON DEPICTING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD (KOIMESIS) WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE APOSTLES. Russian, Palekh, late 18th century. Tempera on wood panel. The background and halos are gilded. The Mother of God lies on a bier surrounded by the Apostles; the story of Jeremiah is depicted in the foreground. Christ in Glory holds the soul of His mother in the form of an infant; He is accompanied by angels and a seraphim, while a bishop and female onlookers stand on either side. Finely painted in rich colors, with the halos and folds of the garments rendered in gold. A vertical crack has been restored. 51.8 x 41.4 cm.
