395 - A CAST IRON ARCHITECTURAL MASCARON PLAQUE IN THE FORM OF A BEARDED CLASSICAL MALE HEAD, LATE 19TH CENTURY

A CAST IRON ARCHITECTURAL MASCARON PLAQUE IN THE FORM OF A BEARDED CLASSICAL MALE HEAD, LATE 19TH CENTURY A cast iron architectural mascaron modeled as a bearded classical male head, possibly representing a river god or Neptune-type figure, executed in high relief. The deeply cast hair falls in heavy, sinuous locks framing a pronounced brow and downcast eyes above a full, textured beard. The mouth is pierced, creating shadow depth within the composition. The mask is shaped with gently canted corners, designed for architectural mounting. The reverse is hollow-cast with relief compression of the facial modeling and uniform wall thickness, consistent with sand casting. The surface retains a dark oxidized patina throughout. Dimensions: 14 1/2 x 10 1/4 in., (36 x 26 cm.) Condition: Surface oxidation and consistent dark patina throughout. Even casting texture as made. No structural cracks or visible losses. Wear commensurate with age and probable exterior exposure. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
