A 1650 DUTCH GOLDEN AGE ENGRAVING OF "ST. BAVO", BY CORNELIS VISSCHER, PIETER SOUTMAN Dutch Golden Age engraving with etching "St. Bavo," from the series "Saints of North and South Netherlands," by Pieter Claesz Soutman (1593-1601 - 1657), a Dutch painter and printmaker from Haarlem. Engraved in 1650 by Cornelis Visscher (Dutch, 1628/29 - 1658). Saint Bavo is depicted wearing knightly armor and an ermine robe, holding a falcon and a sword. Note: Cornelis Visscher belonged to a family of Dutch engravers and printers that began with Jan Claessen (Cornelis' grandfather) and continued with Jansz Claes (1686-1652), Cornelis' father. He engraved with burin and etching, especially by Italian masters of the 17th century, from Rubens, Van Ostade, Van Laer and Berchem. In 1649-1650, he collaborated with P. Soutman and operated in Antwerp. An identical engraving is a part of the Metropolitan Museum collection of the Drawings and Prints Department. Dimensions: Engraving: 12 5/8 x 17 in., (32 x 43 cm.)
