A 1707 ENGRAVING OF HAMPTON COURT, JAN KIP (1652-1722), LEONARD KNYFF (1650-1722), BRITANNIA ILLUSTRATA A fine engraving of the English stately home known as Hampton Court, created by the Dutch artists Jan Kip and Leonard Knyff for their famous 1707-1709 work 'Britannia Illustrata', an important collection of unusually detailed views of English country estates. The caption reads 'Hampton Court in Herefordshire the seat of the Rt Honble Tho: Lord Coningesby Baron of Clanbrazell in the Kingdom of Ireland, & one of his Maj:ts Most Honble Privy Council'. The coat of arms of the Coningesbys is at the center of the caption. Kip and Knyff were both accomplished artists in the Netherlands who followed William of Orange to Britain upon his ascension to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. This work appears to have been started during William's reign but was not published until the reign of his successor Queen Anne, the first monarch of the United Kingdom. Great Britain, c. 1707. Dimensions: 19 1/2 x 24 1/2 in., (49.5 x 62.2 cm.) Condition: Edges frayed, some creasing in places. Light foxing consistent with age. A split starting at bottom centerfold crease with no effect to image. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
