1986 SIMON (NEIL): THE ODD COUPLE (FEMALE VERSION) SIMON (Neil): The Odd Couple (Female Version). New York: Samuel French Inc. [1986]. 8vo, 113pp + [3] adverts; printed pink paper wrappers. Fine copy. First edition thus, Neil Simon rewrote The Odd Couple for female characters instead of just changing the pronouns. He replaced Oscar Madison and Felix Ungar with Olive Madison and Florence Ungar, swapped the weekly poker game for Trivial Pursuit, and replaced the British Pigeon sisters with two Spanish brothers named the Costazuelas. Consequently it achieved moderate commercial success; it played 9 previews and 295 regular performances before closing though it didn't cross the multi-year milestone of the original male version. PRESENTATION COPY inscribed by the author on its title-page: “To Clive Hirschhorn from Neil Simon”. The recipient has written his name on the inside front wrapper “Clive Hirschhorn, New York, April 1987”. He served as the primary theatre and film critic for nearly three decades with the Sunday Express (London, 1966–1995); became the editor of Applause magazine in 1996 and a theater critic for This Is London in 1998; and profiled interviews with major Hollywood icons including Judy Garland (her final interview), Orson Welles, Marlene Dietrich, and Mae West.
