1965 CHAIRMAN MAO'S LITTLE RED BOOK, FIRST COMPLETE PRINTING Mao Zedong (1893-1976): Mao Zhuxi Yulu [“Quotations of Chairman Mao”]. [Beijing:] edited by the Central Intelligence Bureau of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, August 1965. With a sepia portrait of Chairman Mao as frontispiece following the title-page. Small 8vo, [vii], 3, 2, 270pp + colophon; red vinyl binding with front inner hinge cracked showing webbing, but still connected, outer binding partly soiled commensurate with its age and use. Originally published in 1964 with 250pp and 30 chapters, enlarged to 260pp + two added chapters in March 1965, this is the third edition of the book but the first complete printing with one additional chapter, now 33 sections on 270pp. All future printings of Mao’s “Quotations” were based upon this 33-chapter version, including all translations into foreign languages. This copy includes a three-page Preface tipped onto the first page of Mao’s text captioned “Preface to the Second Edition” signed in type by Lin Biao and dated 16 December 1966. This book has been called the “Bible” of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and being the first time the LRB text is published in its entirety, its historical significance cannot be overstated.
