1829 ADAM SMITH, WEALTH OF NATIONS WITH A LIFE OF THE AUTHOR Also, a view of the doctrine of Smith, compared with that of the French economists. Edinburgh: Thomas Nelson and Peter Brown, 1829. Tall 8vo, iv, xxx 404pp + [25] index, mostly unopened; original grey boards with light stains, dark green cloth spine with printed paper label (label chipped and worn). Overall, in very good condition. Adam Smith (1723-1790) was a Scottish economist and philosopher and a pioneer in political economy, often called the Father of Economics. Smith “appeals to natural, political, social, economic, legal, environmental and technological factors, as well as the interactions among them. The work is notable for its contribution to economic theory, particularly in its exposition of the concept of absolute advantage” – Wikipedia. Originally published in 1776, Wealth of Nations fueled the spirit for the American Revolution against the King of England and encouraged democracy over monarchy. Smith argued that deepening the division of labor under competition leads to greater productivity, which leads to lower prices and thus an increasing standard of living—"general plenty" and "universal opulence"—for all. Extended markets and increased production lead to the continuous reorganization of production and the invention of new ways of producing, which in turn lead to further increased production, lower prices, and improved standards of living.
