A LARGE GEORGE WOSTENHOLM & SON IXL "CALIFORNIA KNIFE" BOWIE KNIFE, SHEFFIELD, 19TH CENTURY A California Bowie knife produced by the famed manufacturer George Wostenholm & Son at their 'Washington Works' in Sheffield England, marked as such on the blade along with their 'I*XL' logo and text reading 'The Real I*XL Knife', 'The Hunter's Companion', 'GEO WOLSTENHOLM & SON'S CELEBRATED / CALIFORNIA KNIFE', AND 'None are genuine both those marked I*XL'. The grip comprises two thick horn grip scales, one affixed with a shield shaped metal applique. The thick steel guard with short, rounded quillons. England, 19th century. Dimensions: L: 14 in., (35.6 cm.) Condition: All parts tight. Blade with oxidation throughout. Please make all inquiries before bidding.
