LESAGE (Alain-René). The Story of Gil Blas of Santillane. Latest edition, revised and corrected. Paris, Les libraires associés, 1747. Four volumes, in-12 (162 x 95 mm), red morocco leather lined with green morocco leather, three gilt fillets on the covers, wide, fine gilt lace with small iron motifs on the linings, decorated ribbed spine, gilt edges (Thibaron-Joly). Definitive edition, the last published by the author in the year of his death. This important and sought-after edition—"the first good edition," according to Brunet—features a text considerably corrected and revised by Lesage, a definitive text that has since been used by all publishers. It is illustrated with thirty-two etched plates, unsigned but attributed to Dubercelle, which differ from those in the first edition though are inspired by them. A superb copy, with exceptionally wide margins, bound in beautiful bindings with elaborate lace trim, finely executed by Thibaron-Joly.
