MOLIERE. The Works, revised, corrected, and expanded, 6 volumes – Posthumous Works, 2 volumes. Paris, D. Thierry, Cl. Barbin, and P. Trabouillet, 1682. Set of eight in-12 volumes (162 x 90 mm), red morocco leather, four gilt fillets on the covers, ornate ribbed spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Cuzin), slipcase. The first complete collected edition and the first illustrated edition, compiled after Molière’s death from the original manuscripts by the actors of his troupe, Lagrange and Vinot, who introduced stage directions. Included in the two volumes of the Œuvres posthumes, six plays appear here in their original editions: Don Garcie de Navarre, L’Impromptu de Versailles, Don Juan ou le Festin de Pierre, Mélicerte, Les Amants magnifiques, and La Comtesse d’Escarbagnas. The publishers have included at the end of the last volume *L’Ombre de Molière*, a comedy by Brécourt, unillustrated. The thirty figures by Brissart, engraved by Sauvé, are invaluable for the history of theater and stage direction. Drawn from life, they undoubtedly depict the actors of Molière’s troupe, including Molière himself. A fine copy, with generous margins and no defects, impeccably bound by Cuzin. Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1966.
