Contemporary parchment binding (scuffed and somewhat stained). Brunet III, 1837, 7; Tchermerzine VIII, 428.- Second Folio Edition. It follows the first folio edition, which Montaigne's adopted daughter Marie de Gournay published based on the manuscripts, but is further improved here. The portrait, the title page, and the following three pages of dedication 'Epistre' are missing (each bound in as a copy). There is some light damp staining and slight browning. The first leaf of the preface has minor losses (some letter loss). Endpapers are missing, the pastedown has a tear in the paper covering, and the front inner hinge is cracked.
