Dammamm, C. and FW Ethnological Photographic Gallery of the Various Races of Men. London, Trübner, (1876). Title, 12 plates. With 167 mounted original photographs (album prints). Oblong folio. Green blind-stamped linen album with gilt title on the cover (somewhat rubbed). A rare work of early ethnological photography, here in the English-language edition, which was completed by Carl Dammann's brother Friedrich Wilhelm after his death in 1874. Carl Dammann documented the holdings of the Goddefroy Museum in Hamburg in ethnological photographs from the early 1870s onwards. A large portion of these photographs were published in book form in German between 1872 and 1874 under the title 'Anthropological-Ethnological Album in Photographs'. Only occasionally can the photographer of the original photographs be identified; for example, some of the photographs of Australian ethnic groups are by Thomas Washbourne, Daniel Marquis, and Joseph Wilder. The album is divided by region: Germanic, Romance, and Slavic types; natives from Persia, Arab countries, India, China, Japan, Australia, America, and Oceania. The portraits are mostly in carte-de-visite format (9 x 5.5 cm) and mounted on both sides of 12 cardboard sheets (numbered Plate I-XXIV). The prints are mostly somewhat faded, and the supports are sometimes slightly foxed.
